Quit smoking with hypnosis and counseling
You already know why you want to quit. Clinical hypnosis works on the part that willpower struggles with — the cravings, the triggers and the automatic habits — with a licensed clinician who has been in practice in Rockford since 1976.
Why quitting is so hard
Nicotine is only part of it. Smoking gets woven into everyday routines — the first coffee, the drive to work, a break, a stressful phone call, a drink with friends. Each of those becomes a cue, and the urge shows up before you’ve consciously decided anything. That’s why people who are completely committed to quitting still find themselves reaching for a cigarette.
How hypnosis helps
In hypnosis you’re relaxed, focused and fully aware. In that state, new ideas and responses take hold more easily. Sessions typically focus on:
- Breaking the link with your triggers, so coffee, the car or stress no longer automatically mean “cigarette”.
- Riding out cravings, with quick calming techniques that let an urge pass instead of taking over.
- Strengthening your reasons, rehearsing yourself as a non-smoker so the change feels natural, not like constant resistance.
- Self-hypnosis, a skill you take home and use any time a craving or a stressful moment hits.
More than a one-time session
James is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, not a stage hypnotist or a one-size-fits-all quit-smoking program. That means the work can also address what smoking has been doing for you — managing stress, anxiety, boredom or low mood — so those needs are met in healthier ways and the habit doesn’t creep back.
What to expect
It starts with a free phone call. In your first session you’ll talk about your smoking history, your triggers and what’s worked or not worked before, then experience hypnosis for yourself. Most people are surprised by how ordinary it feels: calm, focused and in control the whole time. Read more about what clinical hypnosis is and isn’t.
Hypnosis can be combined with nicotine replacement or stop-smoking medication — talk with your doctor about what’s right for you.
Quitting smoking with hypnosis: FAQ
How many sessions does it take to quit smoking with hypnosis?
It varies from person to person. Many people expect a single session; in practice, results tend to be stronger when hypnosis is part of a short, structured plan with follow-up and self-hypnosis practice between visits. You’ll talk through a realistic plan at your free consultation.
Does hypnosis for smoking actually work?
Research results are mixed, and no method works for everyone. Hypnosis tends to help most when you genuinely want to quit and it’s combined with counseling and practical coping skills. It can also be used alongside nicotine replacement or medications your doctor recommends.
Can I keep using nicotine patches or medication?
Yes. Hypnosis doesn’t conflict with nicotine replacement or prescribed stop-smoking medications. Talk with your physician about those; James will work alongside whatever plan you and your doctor choose.
Does this work for vaping or chewing tobacco?
The same approach — working with cravings, triggers and the habits around nicotine — applies to vaping and smokeless tobacco.
Will I gain weight if I quit?
Some people worry about this. Hypnosis and counseling can address stress-eating and the hand-to-mouth habit at the same time, so the cigarette isn’t simply replaced with snacks.
Can I do the sessions by Zoom?
Yes. Sessions are available in person in Rockford or over Zoom from home.
